Comprehensive Eye Exam back to top>

This exam is for patients who need a prescription for either glasses or contact lenses. The doctor and staff will work as a team to perform all the visual tests needed to evaluate your visual health and determine your prescription. Testing at Eye Exams Las Vegas will include visual acuity, color vision, stereo tests (depth perception), eye coordination, pupil testing, glaucoma testing, and health evaluation of the front and back part of the eye. A dilation is always included in your comprehensive examination at no extra charge.  You and Dr. Velasco will discuss the importance, side effects and risks of the dilation and will determine if a dilation is needed at your visit or subsequent visits.

Dilated Examination back to top>

Dr. Velasco will administer drops to dilate or temporarily enlarge the pupil to allow her a much better view inside the eye. A dilated exam helps the doctor detect problems such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachments, macular degeneration, and complications with diabetes and high blood pressure, often before there are symptoms. Without the dilation, it is difficult for the doctor to detect problems that occur in the far periphery of the eye.  It is especially recommended if you have never been dilated before, have a history of diabetes, high blood pressure, headaches, flashes of light with or without floaters, high near sightedness, cataracts or a family history of glaucoma or retinal problems.

The side effects of the dilation include light sensitivity and inability to focus at near for reading or computer work which may last up to 6 hours. Although not mandatory, it is always recommended that you bring a driver if you plan to have a dilated exam since your driving ability may be affected due to light sensitivity. Disposable sunglasses will be provided for your comfort.

Diagnosis, Treatment and Management of Eye Disease back to top>

Dr. Velasco is board certified in the diagnosis, treatment and management of many eye diseases such as corneal infections, dry eye, herpes simplex/zoster infections, red/pink eye, allergies, and inflammation of the internal and external structures of the eye. She is also certified to diagnose and treat glaucoma, a certification few optometrists in Nevada have acquired.

Contact Lens Fitting back to top>

In addition to a comprehensive examination, a contact lens fitting evaluation is needed for patients who wish to obtain a prescription for contact lenses at an additional charge. Some insurance companies may cover a contact lens fitting.  A contact lens fitting and necessary follow-up visits are required by law for all new and existing contact lens wearers on a yearly basis before a contact lens prescription is released. A contact lens fitting at iFocus Vision Center includes:

  • topographical map of the cornea
  • examination of the cornea, conjunctiva, sclera and tear film as related to contact lens wear
  • determination of the contact lens prescription
  • evaluation of the fit and comfort of the lens
  • trial contact lenses, contact lens solutions and case
  • instructions for care and safety
  • up to 3 months of follow-up visits relating to contact lenses

Dr. Velasco will work with you to determine the best contact lens modality for your lifestyle. Once you and Dr. Velasco are satisfied with the fit, vision and comfort of the contact lenses, and you have completed all the requested follow-up visits, you will then be able to obtain your contact lens prescription.  Please note that a glasses prescription is not the same as a contact lens prescription. Office Visit back to top>

An office visit is for a patient who needs to see the doctor for a specific problem.  For example, red eyes, dry eye evaluations, recheck of a glasses prescription, dilations, foreign body removals, and glaucoma follow-ups, would be considered an office visit. Charges are determined depending on the nature and complexity of the problem.

Refractive Surgery and Cataract Surgery Evaluations back to top>

If you are interested in refractive surgery such as LASIK or PRK or cataract surgery, Dr. Velasco will help determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. She will work closely with a surgeon that is right for you, to monitor your vision and health of your eyes and will provide all your pre- and post-operative care necessary.

Retinal Photos back to top>

A retinal photo is an excellent way to document the appearance of the major internal structures of the eye such as the retina, optic nerve, macula and blood vessels. It is the best way to track subtle changes of the eye especially between visits for early diagnosis of disease such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and retinal tears or defects. Dr. Velasco is proud to offer retinal diagnostic testing with the Kowa a-D 5Mega camera which allows for fast, easy and painless photos.  Retinal photos can be taken at any visit for an additional fee.
